Rangers sign winger Adam Erne to PTO

Per Darren Dreger, the Rangers have signed winger Adam Erne to a PTO. Erne is best known for his time with the Detroit Red Wings, playing a fourth line role and peaking in the 2020-2021 season with 11 goals and 20 points. Like all PTOs, the expectations for Erne will be low. The ceiling is obviously Jimmy Vesey, but those results are exceedingly rare.

Best guess – Erne is fourth line insurance in case the Rangers need to fill out the roster. Right now, we are expecting one of Brennan Othmann or Brett Berard to make the Rangers, but nothing is guaranteed. If one makes the team, it’s likely Will Cuylle moves down to the fourth line. If that does not happen, there’s a bit of a hole there.

The fourth line is the only line that is pretty much a toss up heading into the preseason, and Erne just adds another body to the mix. He will compete with Vesey, Sam Carrick, Matt Rempe, Adam Edstrom, and Jonny Brodzinski in what is shaping up to be an intriguing fourth line battle, especially if both Othmann and Berard break camp with the Rangers.
