A decade after then-Vice President Joe Biden compared the airport to a third-world country, and after a $8 billion makeover, LaGuardia Airport is now considered the best airport in the United States. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Tuesday announced that LaGuardia was selected as the best airport in the country by Forbes Travel Guide. The accolade is the latest in a series of achievements earned by the airport after its transformation, which began in 2016 and is now largely complete.
Forbes Travel Guide released its first Verified Air Travel Awards, determined by a survey of 5,000 hospitality and travel experts as well as the guide’s most well-traveled fliers.
Honors were awarded in 22 categories across the airline and aviation industry, including an award for Best U.S. Airline Lounge, earned by John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 4. The terminal was recently revitalized through a $1.5 billion modernization project, part of the airport’s overall $19 billion transformation.
“From the very start, our mission at LaGuardia Airport was to transform what was once the worst airport in the nation into an airport that would rival the best in the world,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said.
The achievement is proof that LaGuardia Airport “is no longer a national laughingstock, but something our entire region and country can be proud of,” Cotton continued.
LaGuardia’s Terminal B has also earned the Airport Service Quality Award for Best Airport in North America, the Skytrax World’s Best New Airport Terminal, and the 2021 Prix Versailles from UNESCO, which honors the world’s best contemporary architecture.
